Scope of the role
The new standards for the three sensory mandatory qualification programmes will be announced after Easter 2019, following a period of consultation, and the School of Education will need to make some significant changes in order to remain competitive in the field. Central to these changes is a move toward greater harmonisation across all areas of sensory impairment education.
The post holder will be required to provide leadership and to support the new phase of development of sensory impairment, while also support the existing programmes as changes are introduced:
1) Leadership across the sensory / mandatory programmes. Leadership and development work across the three sensory areas will be needed in order to harmonise teaching, curriculum and assessment.
2) Support for teaching. Teaching on the MQ sensory impairment education programmes, in particular the ‘Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children with Vision Impairment’.
The post holder will:
• Develop a ‘sensory needs’ pathway to contribute to the ISEN (and wider) portfolio, increasing market offer;
• Lead the further development of the VI MQ programme in line with planned new government standards (due 2019), and seek to harmonise this across the broader sensory area;
• Develop the complete Masters programme by either increasing recruitment for the third year masters option (which tops up the two-year MQ PGDiploma), or converting the two-year MQ PGDiploma into a two-year MQ Masters.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to a range of teaching and administration activities relating to the Mandatory Qualifications (MQs) in the area of sensory education (vision impairment, hearing impairment, and multisensory impairment). While the programmes vary, the vision impairment programme consists of a 120 credit master’s programme, an assessed teaching placement (15 days), assessed braille component and a comprehensive series of activities that are monitored and assessed against the outcomes for the MQ.
Learning and teaching
Leadership across the sensory / mandatory programmes:
• Develop approaches to develop shared / harmonised curriculum, pedagogy, and administrative systems across the three MQs, while ensuring they also fulfil the requirements of the new national specification.
• Consider this in terms of teaching models (e.g. the current ‘regional tutor’ model), study weekends, portfolio development, and teaching placements.
• Consider the development of a full (180 credit) masters offer.
• Consider contributions to the broader department and School teaching portfolio.
Curriculum and programme development:
Contribute to leading curriculum development and/or renewal of the MQ Masters Programme in response to new specifications (due Easter 2019). The current programmes and modules (including the specifications) therefore need to be revised in order to align with the anticipated national specification for MQ programmes. This entails supporting the development of new content and structure for each of the 6 modules, on each of the programmes.
Contribute to the successful management of the MQ sensory programmes, in particular the ‘Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children with Vision Impairment’.
Management and administration:
Contributing to Departmental/School administration, including:
• Contributing to the administration/management of research and/or teaching across the Department/School;
• Leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
• Advising on personal development of colleagues and students;
• Making a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
• Managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities;
• Developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach.
