This is a really exciting opportunity to work in a unique 2-19yrs Specialist School that will offer you lots of inspiring and innovative opportunities.
We are looking for an experienced or aspiring Assistant Headteacher to join our Specialist school with a focus on teaching, learning and the curriculum. This enthusiastic and inspiring senior leader would support the Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher in leading Priestley Smith Specialist VI School (for children who are blind and partially sighted), with a whole school focus on the Quality of Education and specific leadership of the Primary Department.
You will lead a team of 3 Middle Leaders in ensuring the Quality of Education is aspirational and innovative, and ensuring that the Curriculum Framework for Vision Impairment is also delivered alongside the National Curriculum.
We are seeking to appoint a person with leadership experience who can support the development of the vision of Priestley Smith Specialist School as an outward-looking centre of excellence in the education of children with visual impairments. It is our mission, through high quality teaching, learning and pastoral care, to develop confident, caring and independent young people who are able to succeed in the world in their chosen field.
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the requirements of the primary curriculum. They will have experience and skills in working with students with SEND in a mainstream or special school setting, displaying a passion for helping all students achieve their full potential. No experience of working with students with a VI is necessary, but the successful candidate will be willing to undertake the Qualified Teacher for Vision Impairment Qualification. Candidates should have strong communication skills and have the ability to relate to parents, staff and students to support innovative pastoral development, pupil support and staff development within the primary department.
Your teaching commitment will be approximately 40%.

About Priestley Smith Specialist School for children with visual impairments
This purpose-built school consists of approximately 90 primary and secondary pupils who all have a Vision
Impairment and the majority of whom have an additional need, including physical, medical, cognition and sensory.
We have a minority of children with a VI and complex needs. Class sizes are small and there is a high teacher pupil ratio. Our pupils learning needs can be very different, from Pre Key Stage 1 to A levels.
We have a “stage not age” approach to develop each child’s individual potential and support them with a highly differentiated tactile learning approach.
