Planning for literacy

In this final section we are going to hear Melanie talking about the plans for Ollie's future and her service's view of literacy media decision-making.

As a follow-up you might like to think about the questions. You can consider them on your own, or discuss them with colleagues either informally or as part of a development day.

Professional view...

Watch a clip of the QTVI describing her plans for introducing Ollie to print and braille. Ollie's literacy development is likely to follow a dual media route.

Select this link for a transcript of the video clip.

  1. What relative weight should be given to print and braille in his literacy development?
  2. What factors will determine this?

Thinkabout...

What do you think of the argument below?

  • There are some young children who have conditions such as RP who can use their vision very effectively for developing reading and writing in their primary school years. In most cases they should be introduced to reading and writing through print in Years1-3 because vision is a more efficient medium for developing literacy than touch. Once their literacy skills have been established they can be introduced to braille in Year4 or Year5 from a position of strength.

More information about dual media use can be found in the Strategies section.

Professional view...

Here Melanie identifies some factors that need to be considered when making decisions about literacy media.

  2. If you had to write a policy about your service's position on learning media decision making what would be its key elements?
