Interpreting Form 2: Use of sensory channels

Form 2 is designed to gather data regarding the child's natural use of his or her senses. The findings of Form 2: Use of sensory channels will reveal the sensory channel that a child may prefer to use, but this may not necessarily be the most efficient way for the child to access information.

For example a child with severe low vision may elect to use their vision to identify objects, but they may identify them inaccurately. Touch might offer the child a more efficient medium for identifying the object but this may not be apparent in the assessment if the child has had no encouragement or opportunity to develop his or her touch skills.

It is therefore extremely important to use the data gathered from Form 2 with caution. This information should be considered within the broader context of the information gathered throughout the rest of the Learning Media Assessment process.

Where children are using a preferred channel (eg vision) inefficiently, they should be given training in the use of touch skills before the observation form can be reliably completed. Many of these children will have been encouraged to use vision and their efforts will have been constantly reinforced.

In situations like this it may be necessary to provide rich experiences in the use of other senses over a lengthy period, and repeat the assessment after a period of time eg one year to gain a true picture of their needs and abilities.
