Following the initial decision regarding learning media, the child will commence a formal educational program in the acquisition of reading and writing skills in the chosen medium/media. The LMA forms may give the impression that the child should move quickly from Phase 1 to Phase 2, Continuing Assessment.
However, for most children, the components of data collection for Phase 2 will require a level of literacy acquisition that may not be in place for one or two years. Therefore, in these situations, and in cases in which the educational team is less confident about their decision, continuing in Initial Selection through Stage 2 for one or two years can be very helpful in confirming the appropriateness of the initial decision.
